 Golden Temple Amritsar or Harmandir Sahib is a gurudwara located in Amritsar, Punjab. Golden temple Also known as the Harmandir Sahib (Temple of God), the golden temple is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Punjab and one of the most important tourist attractions in the Sikh community. The temple is said to be the center of the founding and naming of the city of Amritsar. The 4th treasure of the Sikh community dug a tank and named it ‘Amritsar’ which literally means ‘the lake of immortality’ and built a temple on the lake we know today as a temple of gold.

History:

Among the most prominent spiritual sites in Sikhism, gurudwara is built around a man-made lake that adds splendor and air. The building was completed by Gugu Ram Das, the fourth Sikh guru in 1577. In 1830, Maharaja Ranjit Singh embalmed the shrine with gold foil, which led to its name. An important temple in Sikhism, the Golden Temple became the center of the Singh Sabha Movement between 1883 and 1920. After the 1984 conflict between the Indian government led by Indira Gandhi and the Sikh factions led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale who left several Sikhs dead and the Akal Takht destroyed, the gurudwara building was rebuilt. Admission is free at Golden Temple and free darshan is available to all devotees. Golden Temple Timings for all days of the week are between 05:00 am and 10:00 pm. Amritsar Airport is about 13 miles from the Golden Temple, and the Amritsar Railway Station is less than two miles from the temple.
