Bodh Gaya is about 96 km from Patna City, Bihar state, India.

Mahabodhi Temple Complex at Bodh Gaya

The Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Bodh Gaya is located at the Gaya district in the central part of the state of Bihar, in the northeastern part of India. It is part of the great Ganges(trans-boundary river of Asia) plains. The Mahabodhi Temple is located at the place of Lord Buddha's enlightenment(exhortation). Bihar is one of the four holy(religious) sites related to the life of the Lord Buddha(Siddhattha Gotama), and particularly to the attainment of Enlightenment.



The first temple was built by Emperor Ashoka(Ashoka the Great) in the 3rd century B.C., and the present temple dates from the 5th or 6th centuries. It is one of the earliest(First) Buddhist temples built entirely with brick, still standing in Bodh Gaya India, from the late Gupta period.  Emperor Ashoka built the first temple(Mahabodhi Temple), the balustrades, and the memorial column.
